WILLIAM (1) LATTA
William Latta was born about 1761 in
Donegal, Londonderry, Ireland. Died __________. Buried: __________. On October
30, 1776, he enlisted in Captain John A. Bradt's Company of State Rangers, being
discharged on January 23, 1777 as unfit for duty. His name appears on the rolls
of the 3rd Albany County Militia. https://www.schenectadyhistory.org/resources/hanson/revwar_l_p.html
He came to New York City in 1780. Married: Ann
Jackson. She was Born: ________. Died:________. Buried________. His daughter
Margaret is said to have been born in 1778 in the USA. If William immigrated to
New York in 1780, then Margaret could only have been born in Scotland or
Ireland, and not the USA. His son Samuel was born in 1780 and since there is no
other information found on Samuel, this neither supports or disproves either
one. There is a David Latta married to an Anne Stewart in Albany in 1812. Could
this be Samuel? John was reported to have been born in New York in 1782. Since
William was already in the Albany area in 1776, John was probably born in the
Albany area. In the 1790 Watervliet Township census, William is listed as a lime
maker by trade but educated for sea captain. "Immigration 1780 - came to New
York City." He lived in the Albany, N.Y. area before his death. When he died his
widow married Mr. Hays. 45 John Chester (4) Latta, his great-grandson, said that
William must have married a Jackson, "As our relations to the Jackson must have
come through him." {Also Look at Branch No. 4, "2 James (2) Latta and his wife
Sarah Jackson of NY." He was in N.Y. at the same time and area as this William
(1) Latta, This could be a brother and the relation to the Jackson family, 45
John Chester (4) Latta talked about. And/or the wife of William (1) Latta was
Ann Jackson.}
Children:
1 SAMUEL (2) born abt. 1780. No
History other than he built a house in New York City, when one or two stories
high he covered it. He also constructed the roof that he afterwards built seven
or eight additional stories.

owned by his Brother in-law, John Latta. Robert H. Latta reported that Margaret

The 1790 Census for Watervliet, Albany County, NY lists 1 male over 16 (William), 1 female over 16 (Nancy) and 5 females (daughters).
This newspaper article may or may not be the William Latta who is head of this branch, but I thought I would place it here for now, since it looks to be in the same area:
Windam Herald, June 11, 1791: Albany, May 26. By a gentleman of veracity, who resides at the settlement of Appletown, between the Seneca and Cayuga_akes, which place he left yesterday, fe'nnight (sic), we are informed, that the Six Nation of Indians (the Cayuga excepted, who are reduced to less than a dozen families) are extremely peaceable and quiet, and appear as anxious to maintain the present tranquility as any of the citizens of the United States. That the report of a settlement's being destroyed, is supposed to have originated from the murders which were lately committed at French Creek, on the Alleghany River, by some of the Southern Indians. Mr. Latta of Canadasago, which place he left this day week, and is now in this city, confirms the above information, and father informs us that on or about the 20th of March last, he was at Buffaloe Creek, to which place he carried a message to the Indians from Col. Proctor of his intentions of holding a treaty with them as soon as he could conveniently reach that post; that the Indians were much pleased with this message, and immediately sent word thereof to their friend, Col. Butler, at Niagara with a request, that he would send them some port, rum & c. which they were in want of to treat their American friend (meaning Col. Proctor and others) at the intended treaty; that the answer of Col. Butler evinced a readiness to supply them & a friendly disposition towards the Americans; that Col. Pickering is to hold a treaty with the Six Nations, at the Painted Post, on the Pennsylvania line, on the 15th of June, which it is expected there will be a very general attendance of the Indians; and that every appearance favors of a renewal of the former treaties, and a brightening of the covenant chain between the Indian tribes in that quarter, and the United States of America. www.geocities.com/Heartland/Fields/4791/windhamheraldjune1791.html

Notes for William (1) Latta
Robert H. Latta in his research claimed
that William (1) immigrated to New York City in 1780 and then moved to Albany,
New York where he remained until his death, dying between 1797 and 1800.
On researching this I have located a William Latta, who in 1768 came by ship from Glasgow, Snow Catherine and immigrated to Boston. At this time he is listed as a joiner. He remained in Boston a short time, then moved to the town of Taunton, Mass., where he in 1771 bought property from Robert Caldwell, 16 Dec. 1771 and the sale of this land was registered on 18 May 1772 in Book 54 page 372. On March 2, 1773, he bought another parcel of land off of Simeon Tisdale (saddler) and this transaction was registered in Book 5, page 129. William then leased land with a shop and wharf on the Great River which is known as the Taunton River and this was registered January 26, 1775 in Book 6 page 82 or 52. It would also appear that on September 20, 1775 William purchased yet another parcel of land from Peter Hurst or Hunt and is registered September 26, 1775 in Book 56 page 398. In 1776 William was arrested as he refused to join the Rebel army and was sent to goal, (unknown at this time where the goal was, could have been Concord, Charlestown, Reading) and was later released. Upon his release he showed what comforts he could to the British prisoners both of the army and navy. On July 9, 1777, a warrant was issued in Bristol County for persons including William Latta and a trial date on the first Monday in August, 1777 (August 4) was set. The warrant was signed by James Williams and Robert Luscombe. The warrant stated that he was to be sent to a prison ship and then to be transported off of the continent either to the West Indies or Europe.
William was arrested and placed on a prison ship, one story has it that he made good his escape in February 1778 and joined up with the British in Rhodes Island, I think that it is more likely that he was shipped out to Jamaica Bay, Queens New York, which at the time was still held by the British, likely involved in a prisoner exchange along with Sir Archibald Campbell 71st Reg. At this time there was a prisoner exchange, Ethan Allen was exchanged for Archibald Campbell. At the time Allen was being held by the British on Long Island. It is logical to assume that since Campbell was sent to Long Island that William went with him.
On March 26, 1780, all the lands and property of William Latta was seized as the Rebels claimed the land seemed as William Latta was absent from the county. There seems to be a reference that he had been absent from his lands since May 1778. There seems to be some evidence that he was a woodworker by trade. He was also a very well read man, and this is supported by the books he apparently owned.
If this is the case then William Latta of Taunton and William (1) Latta of Branch 13 could be one and the same.
Margaret is said to have been born in 1778 in the USA, if William immigrated to New York in 1780 then Margaret could only have been born in Scotland or Ireland and not in the USA.
Samuel was born in 1780, since there is no other information on Samuel that has been found, he neither supports nor disproves either one.
John was reported to have been born in New York in 1782, this would fix both Williams as Long Island was still a British stronghold in 1782 and if William of Taunton did leave with Archibald Campbell then he would have remained in New York.
There are no more children born to William until 1786, that being Janet who was born in New Scotland, Albany County, New York.
More About William Latta: Census 1790, Watervliet Township, Immigration, 1780, came to New York City, Occupation: lime maker by trade educated as a sea captain.
Notes for Ann Jackson: Robert H. Latta's research indicates that Ann may have been an Ann Jackson. There appears to be no documentation to support the Jackson theory. The records of the New Scotland Presbyterian Church only refer to her as Ann, no surname given.
Note from the 1930's About 2 John (2) Latta.
When 2 John (2) Latta
was 16 years of age with his Sister, 7 Margaret "Peggy" (2) Latta went to
Ontario, Canada. He died of dropsy. Quaker. Put up a flour mill, saw mills and
factory 11 miles north of Belleville, Ontario. He followed the trade of
ancestors in Manufacturing flour. The village was first called Latta's Mills but
changed to Latta.
Note 1996: The town of LATTA, Ont., Canada is still there.
The last time I was there in 1994
one of the last Mills owned by the Latta
family was still on the bank of the river, I was told it has now been taken
down. I also found an old grave yard south west of town on Cemetery Road with
many of the old family members buried there. There is also a cemetery south east
of town with many family in it. I have a record and a photo of each head stone
with the name Latta on it.
171 Samuel J. B. (5) Latta, {grandson of
2 John (2) Latta}, says "Now for the story. I cannot
authenticate. My
original Canadian ancestor came from the U.S.A. to the vicinity of Belleville,
Ont., Canada. He left a brother, one or more, in the U.S. Both or all took much
interest in politics. My ancestor was pro-British; the other or others, were
pro-colony. My ancestor was quite warm in his dissensions and quite set in his
attitude, so much so that he said he would not live under any flag other than
the British; so, when the government offered grants of land and other
concessions to the colonists of this type, he accepted the proposition and came
to Canada. The dates you have given seem to lend at least a color truth to this
story."

Note from
1930's .
70 John (4) Latta told his son 171 Samuel J. B. (5) Latta, That
his Latta ancestors were millers from way back. And that they lived in
Londonderry, Ireland. This looks as if they were connected with branches 1,3 and
4. Children;

305 PAUL
CYRIL (8) LATTA
Paul was born December 1, 1961 in Toronto, Ontario. He
was a big baby and his feet were 4.1/2 inches at birth. The nurses were so
surprised they measured his feet before they weighed him. He had trouble
learning to read in Grade One until it was discovered that his hearing was poor
and he had serious allergies. Tubes were inserted in his ears and he suddenly
discovered reading and read avidly all his life.
He had a great interest
in history and in military history in particular. We had to visit every fort we
ever heard of in Ontario and Quebec. Paul collected toy soldiers and would buy
small lead soldiers and painstakingly paint them in authentic detail as to
costume, weapon, etc. with a toothpick, even to making them appear unshaven. As
a young teenager, he played military board games with his friends and our dining
room table was often covered with an ongoing game, for weeks. We frequently had
whole battle scenes laid out on the living room floor. His first paying job one
summer was as a guide at Fort York in Toronto. The guides wore the authentic
costumes and practiced drills for tourists.
He dropped out of his first year
of university and began working in Northern Ontario for various mining and
prospecting companies during the Summer and Fall. He loved nature and working in
the woods. As long as he was able, he took long bicycle rides all over the city,
discovering hidden trails and a wonderful greenhouse. In the winter, Paul and
his friends would cross country ski on the same trails. When he lived in the
city, he worked at various restaurants in the kitchen as a cook's helper. He
developed a love of cooking and worked his way up to finally become the manager
of the IBM cafeteria. Like his sister and parents, Paul loved animals,
particularly dogs. He had a large German Shepherd for many years. When he came
home to visit, he always took our dogs for long walks. When he was seriously
ill, I would bring the dogs to visit him, because he loved them so. He read a
great deal. He loved books on philosophy, Far Eastern religions/philosophies,
all the
great classics and science fiction. He also loved both classical
music and rock music. (Never mind, his mother loves classical music and country
music!) Before his final illness, we took Paul to Calgary and drove to Vancouver
through the Rockies. Paul and I also went to Ireland in August, 1993 because he
always wanted to see it. I have a crystal hanging in my window which Paul gave
me. It shines rainbow lights all over the room. We were good friends as well as
mother and son, I miss him terribly. Two years before he died, Paul and his best
friend, took a few lessons and did a parashoot jump. It was something he had
always wanted to do. We did not talk of death often, but I know that Paul's
spirit is with me. He believed that and put it in his last Mother's Day card.
The other thing he did was: When he told me he had a fatal illness, he also told
me that if it was within his capability, the day he died he would order 2 beagle
puppies for me. Years before when my father died, I used to hold our beagle
puppy and rock in the rocking chair. Well, I assumed he
had forgotten about
the beagles, but no. Just before he died, he told his sister he was worried
about her and about his father. She asked him, what about Mom? Then he asked her
to get me a beagle pup. And a year later, for Christmas, she did. So, my beagle
puppy is a very special gift and I love him dearly. Just after Paul told me how
sick he was, I was driving him home (having done his laundry) when we heard
Dolly Parton singing "And I will always love you." I had to pull the car off the
road and I still do to this day if it plays on the radio. Because, you see, I
will always love my son.
