The head of this family came from Ireland and settled in Pa. Had at least three sons, two of these settled in Charleston, S.C. and engaged in the mercantile business. The wife was killed crossing the ocean when she went after some money. They, or their descendants, bought real estate in the upper part of S.C. at Pickens or Spartenburg as late as 1885. One of them was Thomas, another David.

____ (1) Born in Ireland before 1765. Died: in 1882 .Buried at Diamond Hill, Jackson Co., Ga.; drew Lee County land granted Aug. 2, 1836. Also seen as David LATTEY & David LATTY. Married twice: (1) First wife Unknown, about the beginning of the Revolutionary War. He soon after joined the army. Shortly after he obtained permission to go home as his wife was confined and gave birth to twins, and she and the children died. He returned to the army and remained until the close of the war. (2) In 1784 he married Mrs. Priscilla Shelton, nee Kichens. She had two children by Mr. Shelton, Joseph and Sarah. Sarah married Samuel Bean and lived near Murfreesboro, Tenn. Six sons by second wife, all born and reared in S.C. Went to Hall Co., Ga. in 1820 with five living sons.  There was a David Latta in the 10th Pennsylvania Regiment who deserted on May 13, 1778 from Valley  Forge.  If this is the same David Latta, then he may have left Valley Forge at the time his wife was due to have the twins.  He may have deserted, and then after the death of his wife and children, moved to Georgia and joined the militia there.

Married: Elizabeth Herndon of Abbleville, S.C. in 1810, daughter of John and Jane Herndon. She was born in 1786 and died in January of 1852, in Hall Co., Ga. He served in the U.S. Army during the removal of the Cherokee Indians to Ark. in 1837-8. Hall County Military Indian War - John Latty of Buffington's Company of Lindsey's Georgia Militia, Cherokee Wars. John's son were farmers, mechanics, and cabinet makers. Members of Missionary Baptist Church. Children:

30 JANE (4) b. in 1813; m. John Culpepper; d. Franklin Co., Ga. 1896. Seven children. Two of her sons, John E. Culpepper and Merriday H. Culpepper served in the Confederate Army. Caleb Oliver LattyJohn (3) David (2) ____ (1). b. October 12, 1820 in Hall County, Georgia; d. September 3, 1903 in Hall County, Georgia. Name also spelled Lattie and Latty. Married Margaret F. Browning, daughter of Solomon and Gail Browning, of Jackson Co., Georgia about 1846. She was born on December 30, 1820 and died on August 21, 1892. He served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War in 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry in Hampton's Legion.  In 1857 he lived at Ashville, Alabama and in 1861 he went to Georgia.  

Caleb Oliver Latty, a native of Hall County, Ga. born in 1820, enlisted in "Hopkin's Rangers" Co. C, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry in July 1863. He was transferred to Co. D, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry when it was organized. His oldest son was Berdine D. Latty, also in Co. D.

In January 1865, he was sent to Georgia on a dismounted furlough to get a horse. Private Latty was cut off from command by Sherman's army and was still in Georgia when General Lee surrendered. He was captured on May 8, 1865 at Athens, Ga. Captured at the same time was his second son, C.C. Latty of Co. K, 11th Georgia Cavalry; his nephew, John E. Culpepper also of Co. D, 7th Georgia Cavalry. They were all paroled the same day and allowed to go home.

Private Caleb Oliver Latty died in Hall County on September 3, 1903 and is buried at Timberidge Baptist Church Cemetery also in Hall County, Ga.

Merriday H. Culpepper, of Co. D, 7th Georgia Cavalry, was another of Caleb's nephews.

She was born March 27, 1844. He served in the Confederate Army in "D" Co. 37th Ga. Vol. Inf. under Gens. Bragg, J.E. Johnston and J.B. Hood, in every general engagement the army had in Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia, except Hood's last battle at Nashville, Tenn. Was wounded just after the Franklin fight, captured and sent to Camp Chase, Ohio. Released May 16, 1865. In 1907 lived at Ider, DeKalb Co., Ala.

Julia Ann Cagle, daughter of Joseph Cagle in Rome, Floyd Co., Ga. in 1847. After his death, Julia married John Farmer and they lived in Missouri in 1880. (In the 1870 census, Julia lists a daughter named Abigal McLaughlin. - this report was from Patricia Bundy) Julia died at Granby, Mo. April 18, 1908.

Buried at Griffin, Ga. in the Latta Cemetery (also known as the Latta-Hammond Cemetery, located on Musgrove Road in Griffin, Georgia). Married Mary E. R. Hammond of Spalding Co., Ga. January 11, 1871. She was born October 16, 1841 in Butte Co., Ga., daughter of Charles and Nancy Jester Hammond of Edgefield, S.C. She could trace her ancestry back to 1600. Her father was in the War of 1812. Five of her brothers were in the Confederate Army. William served in the Confederate Army in "A" Co. 53d Ga. Vol. Lost right leg below the knee at Funct Town, Md. Eunice Margaret Lattie Starks, 74, of Gilmer County, Elijay, Georgia, died November 23, 1982 in Atlanta, GA. Mrs. Starks was born August 11, 1908, in Gilmer County, GA, the daughter of the late John Michael and Mary Polly Harper Lattie. She is survived by her husband, Rev. Walter Starks; daughters, Mrs. Oleeta Parks, Mrs. Mary Nell Ellis, Mrs. Glenda Whitaker and Mrs. Margie Arnold; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren; brother, Claude Lattie, sisters, Mrs. Opal Starks and Mrs. Myrtle Holt. Services were held November 26, 1982 at Calvary Way Baptist Church. Interment was in Mountaintown Baptist Church Cemetery.
