2 JOHN (2)
LATTA
John (1). Born in Ireland in 1722; d. in 1798 in Westmoreland Co.,
Pa. Came to America before the Revolutionary War. Was a Captain in that war.
Three sons served under him. Married: Mary Daugherty She was born in 1732,
married in 1750, and died 1808. She was the daughter of Edward Daugherty,
1690-1736.{ Revolutionary soldier} & Mary Dunwoodie, 1692-1766 of Lancaster,
Pa. Edward Daugherty living in Lancaster in 1717 married before 1720 to Mary
Dunwoodie. He died 1736 and she administered his estate. She died in 1766 and in
her Will mentions her eldest son, Edward and his children. Among them was Mary,
wife of John Latta.
In the biography of Thomas McKean, signer of the Declaration of Independence, it is noted that he served under Capt. John Latta of the Second Company of the Philadelphia city Associators. Thomas McKean attended the school of Rev. Frances Allison and was a classmate of the Rev. James Latta (Branch 8). Thomas McKean was made Captain of his own company, the 4th Company of Philadelphia City Associators two months later. The Philadelphia Associators was organized in 1775 and consisted of three line battalions each of about nine musketeer and one light company, a rifle company, and the Philadelphia City Troop of Light Horse. This was the civic militia of the Philadelphia area. the Philadelphia Associators consisted in 1776 of four line battalions and a rifle battalion organized by volunteers from the militia of the Philadelphia area. Under Acting Brigadier General Cadwalader they joined Washington's army in the closing days of 1776 and participated in the Trenton-Princeton campaign. Each line battalion had a light company and during the campaign the light companies and Captain Thomas Rodney's Light Company of the Dover Count, Delaware Militia was formed into a light battalion under Captain George Henry.
As the Latta family moved into other areas of Pennsylvania, they joined the militia in that area. The family history of Branch 17 states that John Latta crossed the Delaware with George Washington and fought in the Battle of Trenton. If he served under his father with the Philadelphia Associators, then this story could be true.

The number system has been changed for the update,

1999 NOTE;
Mrs.105 "Major" Ellwood (6)
Latta writes:
"My family name is Park. It is spelled various ways in the
family. Park, Parke, and Parks. They are Virginians, Hampshire Co., W. Va. A
branch of the
family is living on the land of Capun Bridges, that my great
grandfather, John Parke, lived on and had a deed for it signed by Thomas,
Lord Fairfax, in 1762. They possess this deed, also his and his wife's Wills.
The Parks of Virginia are descended from Col. Daniel Park, Sr., Secretary of
State 1679. Member of the Council in 1670. Born in England 1628. Died 1679,
buried in Benton Church, Williamsburg, Va. There is a tablet to his memory in
Benton Church. They were of Essex Co., England. His won, Daniel Park, Jr.,
was Governor of Leeward Islands. He married Jane Ludwell, daughter of Philip
Ludwell, Governor of No. and So. Carolinas. Their daughter, Lucy, married
Col. John Cuastis, whose son Daniel Parks Custis, was Martha Washington's
first husband. Later in 1759, Martha Custis married George Washington. George
Washington surveyed this land of my ancestor at Capon Bridge.

Dear George P. Latta
Thanks very much for your e-mail. You hit it right.
149 John Selzer (7) Latta was my father.
What I am interested in tracing
at this time is the lines of one or two of his uncles, of which you have
listed two:
103 James Selkirk (6) Latta & 105 "Major" Ellwood (6) Latta. I
have lots of information that is missing and will be delighted to make it
available to you. I am leaving on vacation day after tomorrow, and will put
this project at the top of my list when I return in mid-Sept. At the very
least, I can provide you with one of the most incredible "small world" stories
you've ever heard.
Very best regards,
153 John (7) Latta
