were John and James.  I do not know the name of the other one.  James is supposed to have settled in N. Carolina and raised a family.  John went north and was lost sight of.  So was the other one. -- William C. Latta.

     James (3) James (2) ____ (1).  Born in Orange Co., NC November 23, 1782; d. August 13, 1848 in Hickman Co., KY; m. Mary Ann Moore, daughter of James Moore and Catherine Robinson, on Oct. 4, 1803 in Orange Co., NC.  She was born September 27, 1782 and died June 28, 1858.  This is the same family as Branch 31, Family #5.  He moved to Graves Co., Ky. with his family, buying and selling land. Both are Buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Graves Co., KY.  I have heard my father say that Thomas fought under General Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans January 8, 1815.  They moved to Hickman Co, Ky. about 1829.  WILL (HICKMAN CO., KY - Will Book C, page 308: Kentucky Dept. of Libraries and Archives: LDS Microfilm 321381) "The Last Will and Testament of Thomas Latta of the County of Hickman and State of Kentucky.  I, Thomas Latta, considering the uncertainty of this mortal life and being of sound mind and memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form following, to-wit, this is to say, First, I give and bequeath to my son, Alexander, the tract of land that I live on containing 2.20 acres, also all the stock and farming utensils, household and kitchen furniture with the exception of four beds, also two negros namely Gilbert and Laten.  Secondly, I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Mary, all the negros belonging to my estate not named in this my last will with their increase during her natural life and that at her death they be equally divided among all my children, and furthermore it is my will that my wife have the privilege of the house and that my son Alexander support her and he have the management of the above named negros and all the proceeds thereof over and above what will be necessary for a comfortable support for her.  Thirdly, I give and bequeath to my son James one negro boy named Greon.  Fourthly, I give and bequeath to my son Thomas the one negro boy named Jerry.  Fifthly, I give and bequeath to my daughter Selina Mary one negro girl named Jane.  Also one horse, saddle and bridle worth $75 dollars, two beds, bedstands and furniture, one cow and calf, two head of sheep, one chest, one set of knives and forks, one set of plates, one oven.  Sixthly, my will is that whereas I have given to my daughter, Jane Laffoon one negro girl named Mary, the st negro she has had and now has in possession that to hold her and her increase as her right and that in case she the said Jane Laffoon should die that Sinnet Laffoon her husband and my son in law have and hold said negro girl and her increase as his right and property.  Seventhly, whereas I have heretofore appointed to some of my children, namely, Elizabeth, James, John, William W., and Thomas W., Catherine and Jane of my personal and real estate, it is my will that they have and hold the same as their right and that they shall not be required to account for the same.  Lastly, I hereby appoint my son Alexander R. Latta and my son in law, Sinnett Laffoon, sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament, and hereby revoking all former wills by me made in writing. October 23, 1904.   She is buried in the West End Cemetery, Stephenville, Erath County, TX.  1860 Census, Potato Patch District, Hickman Co., KY: Latta, W. H., age 44, b. TN, David C., 5, John C., 3, and Finley B., 1.  No wife is listed with the family.  (also the children don't match his.   There may have been a page missing in the census.  W. H. Latta is found on the last line of one page, and the children are listed on the first lines of the next page, without last names).  He moved to Stephenville, Texas with his family in 1870. Children:

Dennis at Ft. Worth, Texas September 15, 1907.  James Alonzo Latta owned a bar or saloon, and bought and sold property with the Bryan family. He went to Texas with his parents in 1870. Erath County Democrat, Dublin, Texas, Saturday, May 16, 1896 - J. A. LATTA of Stepheville handles the whiskey brands: Rokey Comfort, John Hemming, and Clifton Spring. He is prepared to furnish you with the finest whiskeys at $2.50 to $6 per gallon. 

Obituary - Terrell Bryan This obituary, transcribed by Diana Bryan Quinn, was published in the Stephenville Tribune. The date is unknown. The copy was obtained from the Dick Smith Library at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. Note: Mrs. James "Lon" Alonzo Latta was the daughter of Terrell, not Mrs. Tom Latta.  {title was not legible} Monday {one line not legible} telegram from R. E. Bryan in Bronte announcing the death of Mr. Terrell Bryan and requesting that Mr. Bennett, Albert Schnable and Mrs. John Cameron make arrangements for a Masonic funeral. Mrs. Tom Latta was a daughter of the deceased and was also a foster mother of Mrs. Cameron. Deceased was born November 17, 1837 and died May 16, 1920. He was badly wounded in the civil war in the service of the confederacy and never recovered. Some ten or twelve years ago his feet slipped from under him in front of the First National bank and this increased his suffering.   For a number of years he was justice of the peace at Stephenville, and when he became feeble was sent to the soldiers home at Austin, but did not remain there long. After returning from there, he went to the home of his daughter at Bronte where he died.  Stephenville Tribune - May 31, 1920 Transcribed by Emily Quinn. Note: R. E. 97    MILLARD RAY (7) b. December 15, 1896 in Erath County, Texas; d. 1988 in Le Flore, OK. Her father, "Lon" Latta remarried a Mary Dennis in 1907 and may have lived in the Fort Worth area. Apparently, Millard Ray moved to Baylor County to live with Redic and Myrtie Bryan, sometime after the death of her mother. Married Ernest J. Pyle.  Two sons: Shirley James Pyle and Maxwell Westbrook Pyle.  Lived at Cross Plains, Texas. Millard Ray lived in Baylor County, Texas.  She was active in the Baptist Church where she sometimes played the piano.  She was teaching school in Cache Creek in 1920 and by the fall of 1920, was the principal of that school.  Found in the Baylor County Banner - October 13, 1921 - Pyle - Latta (Marriage) Word comes from Prof. E.J. Pyle that he is principal of a ward school at Mindland {Midland} and is in charge of about 300 pupils. His wife is also teaching there. Mention was not made at the time in these columns of the marriage of Mr. Pyle and Miss Millard Ray Latta which occurred at Denton about two months ago. Miss Latta was at that place attending the Normal. After the wedding the couple went to Mr. Pyle's home at Cross Plains for awhile and then on to Midland. These young people are well known and admired in Seymour. The bride made her home here for a number of years, being the niece of Mr. R. E. Bryan. Mr. Pyle was principal of the grade school here last year, and was well liked as a man and as a teacher. The best wishes of all Seymour friends go with the couple.

           21 John Alexander (6) Latta of Crystal City, Texas writes: "My father told me of visiting Becky Sparkman (branch No. 31) who was my grandfather's sister and of visiting Polly Robinson (sister of Becky Sparkman), who was his grandfather's sister.  He also visited Uncle John Latta in Maury Co., Tenn.  It was the custom of my string of Latta's to name the first born son for the grandfather of one side or both."
