(Notes from 1930's about 9 ROBERT (3) LATTA)

From Historical Sketches of North Carolina from 1584 to 1851. From Journal of Committee of Safety: "Whereas Robert Latta complained to this Committee that sundry persons are indebted to him and will not pay their accounts. Resolved: That the said Robert Latta again make demand of each person his debt, and upon non-payment, to demand security for the payment of the same on the first day of November, next. Upon failure there of he is hereby authorized to spe for the same." On page 374, "Robert Latta came into Committee and acknowledged the receipt of L14.10s. supposed to be counterfeit, from Adlai Osborne, agree to order of Committee." Osborn was afterwards arrested as a tory.

(Notes from 1930's about 4 Joseph (2) Latta and son)

Rev. S.A. McPherson, Waxahachie, Texas, descendant of Elizabeth Latta and A.M. McPherson, wrote that Joseph Latta's (4 Joseph (2) Latta) name does not appear in census for Mechlenburg Co. for1810, nor his son John. (10 John (3) Latta). He thinks that Joseph must have removed back to Pennsylvania before he was listed in 1771, and remained there till the close of the Revolution. He also writes that the U.S. Census for 1800, gives Joseph Latta 1 male, head of family. 1 male between 10 and 16; 1 between 16 and 25; 1 over 45; females under 10; 3 between 10 and 16; 1 between 16 and 25; and 1 between 35 and 45. No slaves. He also said "That the birth of Elizabeth (11 Elizabeth (3) Latta) is recorded in the "old Jimmie Stevensen's family Bible." In 1886 this Bible was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Hugh W. Hill of Decatur, Ills. He furnished all the information about Joseph and his family. He said that the Latta and Nesbit families intermarried, and that as Elizabeth's eldest boy was named Robert N. he thought that the maiden name of Joseph's wife was Nesbitt. The 1790 census says Joseph lived in Mechlenburg Co. His family consisted of Joseph and his wife, 1 male under 16, (written from memory), 2 females between 16 and 25, 3 females under 16. Joseph was not in Mechlenburg in 1810.

In the census of 1790, the name of Joseph, of Mechlenburg, N.C. was the only name mentioned. The census is not given for Orange Co., N.C. but in that county five Latta's appeared in the text books; they were John, Jr.; John, Jr.; James Sr.; James Jr.; and Thomas. They were in St. Mary's or Hillsboro Districts.

The mother of Rev. S.A. McPherson, in her journal dated 1854, says that she received a letter from Cousin John Nesbit. Does this connected branches 12 and 19? See Mrs. Edward Dilworth Latta, nee Nesbit branch No. 19.
