The Thirteen Commandments for Names
A few well-earned laughs for anyone deep in the name-search trenches — credited to George Horton.
- Thou shalt name thy firstborn son after thyself, and thy second after thy father, so that future researchers may weep.
- Thou shalt keep no records of thy daughters, for they change their names and vanish anyway.
- Thou shalt sign thy name illegibly, and thy clerk shall spell it however he pleases.
- Thou shalt go by a nickname all thy life, and record it nowhere.
- Thou shalt let thy courthouse burn, thy Bible rot, and thy letters be lost to time.
- Thou shalt tell three different stories of thy family's origin, each to a different grandchild.
- Thou shalt spell thy surname a new way in every county thou passest through.
- Thou shalt reverse thy given names on a whim, that census-takers may despair.
- Thou shalt have a cousin of the same name, born the same year, in the very next township.
- Thou shalt marry a woman whose maiden name is never once written down.
- Thou shalt move without forwarding thy records, twice a decade, forever.
- Thou shalt name every fourth generation "John" or "Mary," without exception.
