Latta Inn, Lattaville, Ohio (Branch 3)
Driving toward Chillicothe, Ohio to research her Latta family, the author spotted a small “Lattaville” sign and a two-story brick house at a dip in the road. A local resident — an architect, as it turned out — invited her in and explained the house was built by William Latta in 1835 as an inn.
The Latta Stone House (Branch 45)
Located in “The Latta Plan,” an area of Roscoe, Washington County, Pennsylvania, the Latta Stone House was built by Allen Stockdale between 1803 and 1805. It is recognized as part of the Underground Railroad, and shares its design with two related houses built by Stockdale’s siblings, one in the same area and one in California, Pennsylvania.
Denver in the 1880s
Robert H. Latta’s own memoir recounts his path west: born in Boston in 1851, trained in the printing trade, and drawn to Colorado at age 30 following his elder brother William, who had settled in Denver a year or two earlier — the same Robert H. Latta whose later genealogical research, now held at the Library of Congress, remains the foundation of this project’s branch system.
The Erie Years: A Railroad Memoir (Branch 4)
Sharon Mountford transcribed portions of her grandfather Sheridan Gorton Latta’s memoir of his and his brother Frank Fremont Latta’s long careers as railroad men, preserving names, dates, and details of a working life on the rails that she hopes will outlive the family and inform genealogy researchers more broadly.
50th Reunion at the Lord’s Vineyard
An estimated 300 people attended the 50th-anniversary Latta family reunion at the Latta Barn in Prairie Grove’s Battlefield Park, honoring the descendants of Tom and Dolly Latta of the Honey Hollow community south of Morrow, Arkansas — complete with history books, a videotape, and commemorative merchandise.
Down at Latta’s Mill
A researcher recalls his mother’s indignation on discovering a novel, The Salt and the Savor, that fictionalized thieves under the Latta name in LaGrange County, Indiana — “The Lattas were never anything but good, upright people,” she insisted — prompting a closer look at the real pioneer-era Latta’s Mill the novel drew on.
